Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a method of identifying embryos that have gene and / or chromosomal abnormalities. The subsequent transfer of embryos without chromosomal abnormalities allows:

• prevent the birth of a child with chromosomal diseases
• to reduce the level of reproductive losses during pregnancy
• increase the efficiency of ART cycles.

How can embryos be examined?
In pre-implantation diagnosis there are 3 approaches:

1. Study of polar bodies – reduction cell formations, which arise when the egg is ripe. They do not play any role in fertilization and can be withdrawn without damage to the egg. Their testing gives indirect information about the chromosome set of the egg, but is not a guarantee of its normality and certainly does not characterize the future embryo.
2. Blastomere study – embryonic cells on the 3rd day of its development (6-8-cell stage). At this time, the cells of the embryo are not differentiated and can be removed without consequences. Their testing characterizes the actual embryo, but does not exclude the possibility of mosaicism (when the cells of the embryo can have a different chromosome set).
3. Investigation of trophectoderm cells – cells of embryonic origin, creating an outer envelope of the embryo. This testing is a characteristic of the embryo and allows for the possibility of mosaicism. However, it is carried out from the 5th day of the development of the embryo, which requires freezing the latter for the analysis period (1-3 days) and further use in the cryotocycles of ART.
