What is labiaplasty surgery?

Labiaplasty is a procedure aimed at restoring the correct form of the labia (the small folds of skin on either side of the vaginal opening). This surgery is performed when a woman has either an enlarged labia, or too small, or there is lack of symmetry. These symptoms may adversely affect sexual intercourse, the patient’s feelings about sexuality and femininity, which ultimately may alter her self-confidence and self-esteem.

Cosmetic surgery on the labia is unlikely to be the most complex operation in plastic surgery, but it does require precise crafting from a specialised surgeon, possessing an artist’s eyes and the hands of a sculptor. What are the indications for labia surgery?

• Misshapen, or enlarged labia minora, which protrudes beyond the labia majora.
• While walking the lobes of skin either side rub together, causing an increase in sweating, and consequent skin irritation.

Labia minora surgery

The essence of a labiaplasty reduction is to remove excess skin tissue of the extended labia minora, so that they do not protrude beyond the labia majora and are “hidden” in depth.

Plastic surgery of labia minora is completed by an overlay of hidden stiches so that the scar will decline with time, and will not be bothersome during sexual intercourse.

Labia minora reduction

A labia reduction surgery has several methods:

• A V-shaped excision of the skin tissue (folding and natural pigmentation is stored).
• Partial labia removal via surgery of the protruding portion of the labia minora.

Both technological surgical procedures for the labia allow you to:

• Achieve the correct reduction of the labia.
• Eliminate asymmetry.
• Prevent the formation of creases at the edges of labia minora.

When using v-shaped excision technique, the volume of the labia minora is reduced once in 3-dimension. After 3-4 weeks, even an experienced plastic surgeon would not able to realise that vulva reconstructive surgery had been conducted.

In some cases, labia surgery is conducted for an increase in size. For this purpose biopolymer gel is injected, which pushes the skin folds forward.

Plastic surgery on labia majora

Normally the labia majora covers the labia minora, reducing the risk of infection, whilst helping to maintain the correct temperature of the genitals.

If you are concerned with hypoplasia or excess of labia majora, the problem can be also easily resolved by means of labiaplasty cosmetic surgery.

In case of hypoplasia or lower fullness of the labia majora, a doctor will inject either bio-gel, hyaluronic acid, or the patient’s own fat (lipofilling) under the skin. However, over time, the substance that gives the labia volume is absorbed, thus making it necessary to carry out the procedure again.

Inflammation of the female genitals, sexually transmitted diseases.

How old do you have to be to undergo a labiaplasty?

Labia reconstruction surgery is strictly from the age of 18 years and over. There is no upper age limit for the procedure.

Preparation for labiaplasty surgery

Prior to the operation a standard set of tests should be completed, as per other plastic surgery procedures eg. liposuction. These would include a general analysis of blood and urine, blood tests for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, as well as a gynaecological smear.

Prior to the operation, you will be required to remove all hair in the area of the labia.

Labiaplasty surgery is performed under either a general or a local anaesthetic, dependent upon patient preference, general condition and the volume of the proposed procedure. Moreover, a light anaesthetic may be utilised in the form of applying local anaesthetic sedation cream.

The duration of labiaplasty surgery is approximately 40-50 minutes, again dependent upon the procedure.

Prior to the operation, a doctor will take a photograph of the labia in order to compare the before and after results post surgery.
