What is botulinum toxin and how does it work

Botulinum toxin is a protein which is naturally produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

There are currently two different types of botulinum toxin commercially available in the Ukraine: Type A toxin: Botox (Vistabel), Dysport (Azzalure) and Xeomin (Bocouture) and Type B toxin: Neurobloc.It is used for treating wrinkles especially expression lines and wrinkles that appear when we smile, laugh, cry, frown and so on. Wrinkles become deeper with age, that is why many people, especially women choose botulinum toxin injections to smooth their wrinkles and look younger. Botox injection blocks the signal that the nerve under the skin sends to the facial muscles to move. As a result the treated skin looks smoother and less wrinkled. But this is not permanent, the procedure needs to be done every 3 to 6 months to keep the nerves blocked.

What areas could be treated with botulinum toxin

The best results are normally achieved with the upper part of the face. Botox injections help to reduce wrinkles around the eyes, between the eyebrows, on the forehead. Experienced doctors make botox injections in the lip area and around the mouth.

What happens before botulinum toxin injection 

First of all you need to come to your practitioner and tell him about your wish to have botox injection. You need to describe very carefully how you see the result of botulinum toxic treatment. The doctor then will tell you whether your expectations are realistic or not. If they are not, he would explain you what you should be ready for, and if you are not sure and have any doubts, then it’s better not to proceed with the treatment until your expectations would match the doctor’s ones. Your doctor will also study your medical history to make sure you don’t have any restrictions and reasons not to have botox treatment. And after that you will have to sign the consent in order to guarantee that you clearly understand the possible risks and benefits of the botox procedure. Picture of you face at rest and with different emotions can be taken to compare it later with the picture after the injection.

What happens during the procedure of botulinum toxin injection

Before making an injection the doctor will clean the skin with antiseptic. Then with the use of disposal syringe he will inject botulinum toxin under the skin of the treated area in several points. It is usually recommended to have only one area treated at the first time so that you could get used to the procedure and see the results. All in all the procedure last 10 or 15 minutes.

How long is the recovery period after botox injection

There is no recovery period, you may return to your normal activities right after the botox injection is done. 

Are there any risks and side effects after the botulinum toxin injection

The procedure itself is almost painless due to the very tiny needles used. Many patients don’t feel any discomfort at all. There might be some swelling or minor bleeding at the treated area afterwards but it is usually not significant and passes quite quickly. Even if you’ve got bruising (especially after botox injection around the eyes), it could be easily covered up with make-up. Among possible complications of botulinum toxin injection are headache and double vision, but they are quite rare. If you had botox injection in the forehead there is a slight possibility that muscles might get too weak to hold the eyelid or it may cause the eyebrows to alter their position – they may drop or elevate. All these complications are temporary, they would vanish within 10 weeks maximum.

Who is not recommended to have botox injection

Although botox injection is quite safe, still there are some restrictions for having it. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding or even just planning to have a baby then you are not a suitable candidate for botulinum toxin injection. Also if you have a bleeding disorder or diseases that affect muscle activity then your practitioner would advise you to avoid botox injection. And you shouldn’t forget to warn a doctor if you are allergic to any medicine.

Usually the cost varies from £175 to £300 per one area.
